How to Choose Trees

by KYW's Fran Sorin

You may think that buying a tree is a ‘no brainer’ but in fact there are several factors that you should take into consideration before doing so.

Some characteristics that a healthy tree should have are as follows:

A big rootball with a lot of fibrous, moist roots for healthy development.

A single, well developed trunk with a small flare at its base.

It should look attractive from all angles and have a foundation that is sturdy and strong with a multitude of healthy leaves. Remember, a taller tree doesn’t mean that it’s a healthier one.

Look for a tree with limbs that are evenly spaced and have a strong attachment with the tree itself. If the branches look squeezed in or lacking in space, don’t bother buying it.
