Temple Prof. Says Basic Toys Make Better Gifts for Kids

by KYW’s Lynne Adkins

Parents may be wandering around toy stores this year wondering what's safe and what's been recalled.

Most of the toys on the 2007 hottest toys list are electronic according Dr. Kathy Hirsh-Pasek, professor of psychology at Temple University:

‘They don't foster the kind of creativity that a child's going to need not only now with having fun for play but in the future where we need to build creative thinkers who can take things apart and put them back together to solve problems of tomorrow.”

She suggests going back to the basics. They are lead free and fun:

“Go down the construction toy aisles; the art supplies, look at books again, ball games board games.”

She urges parents to look for toys that are 10-percent toy and 90-percent child -- meaning the child decides how to use and have fun with the item.
