First Black Friday, Then Cyber Monday

by KYW’s tech reporter Bob Bicknell

This is the first Monday after thanksgiving, a day when many folks head back to the office and go online to go shopping.

The roots of "Cyber Monday" date back to when the average office had a faster Internet connection than the average home. Today, it’s more a matter of convenience or security.

Whatever's behind it, the Internet monitoring company ComScore expects consumers will spend $600 million dollars online Monday alone, a 24-percent jump over last year's total.

Those buying online can only hope retailers are ready. On Friday, a crush of web surfers crashed web sites run by Wal-Mart and Disney.

If you’re using a mouse to check off your holiday list, be sure to check shipping times and prices, there are enough days left to take advantage of free ground shipping. And don’t forget to check return policies, in case your loved ones don’t click with your gift.
