Caring for Christmas Cactus

by KYW's Fran Sorin

If you’ve either bought or been given a Christmas cactus for the holidays, here are some tips on how to care for it!

Christmas cactus, a plant that originates from Brazil, does best when grown in a well-drained commercial potting mix especially made for cacti and succulents. It thrives in bright light during the winter with a cool temperature of around 60F. Place a vase of water near the plant to make sure that it maintains enough humidity and keep it away from drafty doors or heating vents.

Only water the cactus when the top two inches of the soil are bone dry.  These plants do not do well with wet feet. Feed cactus with a houseplant fertilizer every other week when in growth period and enjoy its magnificent blooms!
