Governor Rendell has postponed for three months the collection of premiums for a state-run medical malpractice insurance fund.
“Mcare” is the second layer of medical malpractice insurance Pennsylvania health care providers must purchase. The state, for now, has failed to extend a subsidy that pays half the cost.
So Rendell spokesman Chuck Ardo says while Mcare bills are being sent out, collection has been postponed to allow more time to forge a compromise on the Governor’s plan to use a surplus in the subsidy fund to pay for health coverage:
“The Governor would like to have an opportunity to work out a deal with the legislature, by which we can use some of the surplus in the fund, to help fund insurance for the 800,000 or so uninsured Pennsylvanians, while still providing an abatement for the medical community.”
Collection of Mcare bills will be postponed till March 31st.
