The departure of former city controller Jonathan Saidel from the Philadelphia mayor’s race (see related story) has led to angry accusations against another potential candidate, US congressman Bob Brady.
Jerome Mondesire, head of the local NAACP, accuses local Democratic Party chief Bob Brady (photo above) of actively undermining the candidacy of Jonathan Saidel:
“We know that Bob Brady went to see union leaders and other political leaders -– he went to their homes personally -– over the last several days, and begged them not to give Jonathan Saidel any money, and also to consider supporting him (Brady).”
Mondesire (right), who supports Dwight Evans for mayor, believes Brady did not want two viable white candidates -– Saidel and Brady -- in the race.
In an interview with KYW Newsradio 1060, Brady angrily rejected Mondesire's claim that he wanted to narrow the field of viable white candidates:
“It's totally, totally ridiculous. And I resent it. I resent the race factor being a part of anything in my life. Never have been that way, never will be that. And I have a record that shows that totally.”
And Brady adamantly denied trying to hinder Saidel's fundraising efforts:
"I've never done that, and I never will do that."
Brady has yet to say whether he’s running. Other sources say Brady could, within days, formally create a mayoral campaign committee of his own.
