Phila. Casino Applicant Will Pay for New Year's Fireworks

by KYW's Mike DeNardo

Philadelphia's New Year's Eve fireworks show will go on, thanks to a casino company which has stepped in to underwrite the cost.

"Here's to a happy and prosperous New Year.  God bless you, and we'll see you at the fireworks!"

Mayor Street (above) offered a toast at the announcement that the Planet Hollywood Riverwalk casino is kicking in $50,000 to continue the 16-year tradition of New Year's fireworks over the Delaware River.

The casino is competing for a Philadelphia slots license, and if Riverwalk gets one, Planet Hollywood CEO Robert Earl says the casino will continue its support:

"We will continue to make New Year's Eve fireworks an even bigger and better spectacular so that Philadelphians will eagerly anticipate it every year for years to come."

Mayor Street says he's not concerned about the appearance of any conflict of interest:

"The City of Philadelphia, through the Penn's Landing Corporation, has a contract with these people. They're sitting on a city site.  So we don't think it's a problem."

Music for the fireworks can be heard on KYW Newsradio 1060, which is co-sponsoring the event.
