Purple Tomatoes

by KYW's Fran Sorin

If winter is dampening your spirits, you might want to peruse some seed catalogues that have a wide offering of tomatoes.

Purple tomatoes are still one of the most unusual of all varieties. There are several from which to choose. One of the most notorious of all is ‘Paul Robeson’, which is famous among tomato connoisseurs. It has a distinctive flavor, both sweet and smoky. The fruit itself is a black-brick color and usually weighs in at anywhere from 7-10 ounces.

The Paul Robeson tomato was named for the famous opera singer who was also a Russian equal rights advocate for blacks; consequently this Russian variety is named in his honor.

The seeds can be found at: www.rareseeds.com.
