It's been two years since a Philadelphia councilman introduced a bill to ban the duck liver delicacy foie gras. That bill is now dead, but the councilman says he isn't giving up.
Councilman Jack Kelley thrilled animal lovers and infuriated some restaurateurs in 2006, when he proposed banning foie gras in Philadelphia (see previous stories). His bill never had a hearing and died at the end of Council's 2007 session. So is Kelley throwing in the towel?:
"No. No. No. Without a doubt. No way."
Kelley says this is not a high priority for Council, but he plans to re-introduce his foie gras ban. He first wants to consult with other councilmembers, especially the three new members of Council. Kelley doesn't want to be branded a spoilsport:
"I'm not against any food product whatsoever. But what I am against, I'm absolutely against, the torturing of any animals. Any animals."
Foie gras is produced by force-feeding a duck so the liver becomes enlarged. Restaurateurs say patrons, not councilmembers, should decide.
