Now that Philadelphia has a smoking ban, City Council will look at whether to ban artificial trans fats.
City councilman Juan Ramos has introduced a bill that would ban the use of artificial trans fat in restaurants and fast food joints:
“This is something that has already happened in New York City. It’s happening in Chicago, and Philadelphia should be in the forefront of issues such as these that affect the public health.”
Artificial trans fats are thought to clog arteries and raise your “bad” cholesterol. New York’s board of health voted this month to have eateries phase out trans fat by mid 2008 and use natural oils instead:
“And I hear the taste does not change, so hopefully, I can still eat a good piece of fried chicken.”
Ramos’ plan will be debated in a public hearing sometime early next year.
