Some Catholics Balance Rules of Lent on St. Patrick's Day

by KYW’s David Madden

Ah…to be truly Irish on St. Patrick’s Day. But what of Catholics, who must abstain from eating meat on Fridays during Lent? You might just get a break, depending on where you live.

Corned Beef and Cabbage is just fine in The Philadelphia Archdiocese as well as churches governed in Wilmington and Allentown. A special St. Patrick’s Day dispensation’s been issued.

But in the Trenton Diocese, it’s up to the pastor in each church.  And in the Diocese of Camden, you need a letter from the Bishop.

What’s a South Jersey pub operator to do? Cathy Burke co-owns the Irish Pub on the Atlantic City boardwalk:

“We’re going to be having our world famous fish and chips. We’re going to be having our lunch special which is our cream of tomato and cheddar soup and tuna sandwich and then we have other alternatives.”

Corned beef will be served both down the shore and at her two
Philadelphia locations where menu and religion will not be a problem.
