KYW Newsradio has obtained a letter sent by Mayor Street to the Gaming Control Board in which he, for the first time, endorses one of the five proposals for Philadelphia's two slots parlor licenses.
Until now Mayor Street has not publicly favored any of the five applicants. But in a letter to the Gaming Board in advance of this week’s final selections, Street endorses the Riverwalk Casino as “the best overall.” Street cites several reasons, including the fact that Riverwalk has more local minority investors than the other applicants, and access to mass transit.
But not mentioned in Street’s letter is that Riverwalk would be leasing land at Delaware and Spring Garden which is owned by the city, the old incinerator site. So the city could reap hundreds of millions of dollars in rent.
Street does make clear while he’s endorsing Riverwalk, he’s open to working with whichever firms get the two licenses. And he’s not opposed to both slots parlors going on the Delaware, so long as transportation issues are resolved.
