Will the Spectrum stay or will it go? That question was left unanswered on Tuesday as Comcast-Spectacor outlined development plans for the area of the South Philadelphia sports complex.
Comcast-Spectacor chair Ed Snider says he plans to move ahead with a major entertainment and retail complex called "Philly Live" (shown in artist's rendering above), between the Wachovia Center and the Spectrum.
Snider (right) says the developer believes the Spectrum should go:
"The recommendation by the Cordish Company is to take it down and put up a hotel [lefthand building in drawing]. We have not agreed to that yet."
He adds that the decision on whether the Spectrum will be part of the future should be made in a month or so (see previous story). But he says some fans have already made up their minds:
"I was at the Phantoms game the other night, and the fans were saying, 'Please don't tear this building down.' And believe me, it's not something I want to do. But it's something that, if it makes sense for the entire project... So that's what we're in the project to try to find out."
And Snider is feeling conflicted himself:
"If it comes down, I ain't going to be here. I'm not going to watch it, because it is my baby."
