Verizon is closing three suburban offices and moving 400 workers into the city.
Verizon officials insist the workers don't mind, despite the fact they will now have to pay the city wage tax.
For Mayor Nutter, word that Verizon is relocating to the city more than 400 workers was welcome news. Nutter says it demonstrates Verizon's commitment to the future of the city. The workers handle directory assistance, customer service and accounting.
But those who live outside the city will now have to pay the non-resident wage tax of 3.7%.
Verizon Pennsylvania President Bill Peterson thinks most won't mind:
"I think the opportunity to work in these new buildings that have been rehabbed, to be part of the city, to work downtown, is going to be very exciting for people. I think they're really going to like it. I think our employees are going to be very pleased."
When asked if Verizon would make up the wages they'll now lose to the wage tax, Peterson replied succinctly, "No."
