Pennsylvania has gotten an extension of the deadline to comply with new federal standards for driver’s licenses.
PennDOT spokeswoman Danielle Klinger says Pennsylvania hasn’t yet committed to the federal REAL ID program, the regulations for which were to take effect in May:
“But based on this initial extension granted, the most important message to get out to the citizens of Pennsylvania is that their current Pennsylvania driver’s license or photo identification card can be used for federal official purposes through December 31st, 2009.”
That means Pennsylvania residents will still be able to use their state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards for things like boarding commercial aircraft through the end of NEXT year.
In the meantime, Pennsylvania will continue to evaluate the pros and cons of opting into the program.
