One year ago, management of the Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News sent layoff notices to more than 100 staffers. Now, it seems, that may not be enough.
The Newspaper Guild of Greater Philadelphia says newspaper executive Brian Tierney told them they have to cut another 10 percent or the paper won't be able to make debt payments by the summer.
Diane Mastrull chairs the Inquirer's bargaining unit:
"We're hoping we can do that without that resulting in an actual loss of workers. It's a very skeletal place right now."
Mastrull says managers portrayed themselves as local investors when they bought the papers, and the Guild (which represents editorial, sales, circulation, and clerical staff) would consider it a betrayal if jobs were sent overseas and more staffers were cut from local offices.
