Philadelphia police are investigating potential misconduct by their own department, following a Saturday night crowd-control incident that is said to have gotten out of hand.
Richard Ross (above), Philadelphia deputy police comissioner of Internal Affairs, says his department is looking into possible police brutality at a "sweet sixteen" party on Saturday night in the 2100 block of North Front Street in Kensington:
"Several people making these complaints are alleging that they were struck repeatedly with nightsticks. At this time Internal Affairs is canvassing the area looking for additional witnesses."
He says a "triple assist" was called for the crowd, meaning about 50 officers were present. But Ross says that only one officer wrote up a brutality report against 18-year-old Robert Molina (right), who was arrested for assaulting a police officer:
"Anytime you get 20 people alleging some kind of police misconduct, especially in the form of physical abuse, is a great concern to us."
Ross says the most serious complaint comes from a man who claims that he had to get staples to close a wound after being struck by an officer.
