Homeward bound commuters across the Delaware Valley hear it often: "At the editor's desk, Peter Jaroff."
Peter Jaroff has been a leading figure in Philadelphia's news business for more than 25 years, joining KYW Newsradio at long last in 2007.
Jaroff was born in Detroit and attended Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa, where he was news director and a DJ at college radio station KDIC-FM.
Later he worked as news director at KCHA-AM and FM in Charles City, Iowa, and sat on the regional board of directors for the Associated Press. Then, at WILX-TV in Jackson-Lansing, Mich., he was a "television triple threat" as reporter, photographer, and producer.
Jaroff came to Philadelphia in 1982 as morning news producer for WPVI-TV, where he produced the 12 noon, 5pm, 11pm, and finally the 6pm newscast from 2000 to 2007.
As field producer, he helped organize and produce coverage of presidential inaugurations in 2001 and 2005, the Democratic National Covention in 2000, the US Supreme Court arguments over the disputed Florida election results in 2000, Nelson Mandela's meetings in Zambia and South Africa following his release from prison in 1990, and Phillies spring training in 1990 and 1991.
In addition to his work at KYW Newsradio 1060, Jaroff now teaches as an adjunct professor at Temple University. He lives in Conshohocken with his wife Rebecca, a professor of English at Ursinus College; one dog, and one cat. The Jaroffs have two sons, Aaron and Evan, who -- well into their 20s -- are no longer living at home.
