A Disco Party for the Younger Crowd -- And Their Mommies

by KYW's Lauren Lipton

On the first Sunday of most months, a very special party takes place here in Philadelphia, and you have to be a certain age to get in.

"Baby Loves Disco" is a dance party for six-month to seven-year-olds, and their parents. And hundreds pack into the club Shampoo, at 417 North 8th Street, for the event.

It all began with Philadelphia mom Heather Murphy Monteith (right):

"This is an sort of an accidental business, I alway like to say. It was basically an idea I had to participate with my mommies group. I had a son and had been a professional dancer in Philadelphia for years, and I said, 'You know what, I'm throwing a dance party in my living room.' "

That little dance party became so successful that Baby Loves Disco has spread to cities all across the country and overseas.

"When we did the first one I threw some flyers in playgrounds, hoping 35 people would come. And it sold out."

Parents think it's great:

"We go roller skating on Wednesdays, and one of the moms told us about it and we thought we'd give it a spin. And it's fabulous!"

Kids love it, too. There's dancing with a DJ, a bubble machine, healthy snacks, and a "chill-out" space.
