Some SW Phila. Elderly Get Needed Home Upgrades

by KYW's Karin Phillips

To celebrate its 50th anniversary, the retired persons' advocacy group AARP has come into a Southwest Philadelphia community to help rehab the homes of several senior citizens.

AARP is joining with "Rebuilding Philadelphia Together," the Southwest Community Enrichment Center (CEC), and the West Shore Civic Association to help rehab the CEC, on South 46th Street near Woodland Avenue, as well as do essential home repairs and modifications for seniors in the West Shore neighborhood.

Dick Cheverefils (right) is Pennsylvania state director for AARP:

"What we really want to do is help people age in place. And by making adjustments to the home environment, people can stay in their homes."

Lucille Fletcher (top photo), a vice president of the civic association, is one of ten people who were informed of their good fortune. She says she is getting a new kitchen and a new bathroom in what used to be her mother's home:

"When they picked my name, I just went upstairs and got on my knees again and thanked God. And then I started calling my friends, 'Did you get a letter?'  I tell you, I was very happy."
