Milton Street, brother of the former Philadelphia mayor, has taken the witness stand in his own behalf to answer the charges in his federal fraud and income tax evasion trial (see previous story).
And his answers have raised some eyebrows.
Milton Street, wearing a $3,000 jacket, said he has researched tax law going back to the late 1800s, and bottom line is that collecting tax on people's wages is illegal:
"I could not find in the IRS code the statute that authorizes the Internal Revenue to levy and collect a direct tax on the American people's wages. And I will say to you, Miss Williams, if you find that law for me and bring it in here for me, I will plead guilty to all these charges."
The judge later instructed Street not to give prosecutor Jennifer Williams tasks to perform but just to answer the questions -- because, the judge said, this is a trial, not a guilty plea or change-of-plea hearing.
On other testimony implicating him in fraud and alleged criminal activity, Street has testified that those witnesses are lying.
