Pennsylvania state senator Vincent Fumo (D-Phila.) is recuperating from his second back surgery in five months.
Fumo had a lumbar laminectomy to alleviate bone pressure on nerves in October. And on Tuesday, he underwent a procedure called a lumbar fusion to correct misaligment of vertebrae.
Fumo is facing a number of challenges, and not just in the upcoming primary. In addition to the three opponents he faces in the primary (see related stories), there are his surgeries and a trial in September on federal corruption charges (see related story).
But Fumo’s spokesman, Gary Tuma, says he’s heard nothing from his boss to suggest he might call it quits:
“I’ve talked about the future and about his intention to run many times, and he’s always expressed his intention to run. And he talks as if he’s a candidate. I mean, all I can go by is what the man tells me.”
Tuma says Fumo (in file photo above) will likely be in the hospital for a few days and after his release, while not bedridden, will be restricted in his activities while recuperating.
