Mayor Nutter, Forgoing City Wheels, Gets a New SUV Hyrbrid

by KYW's Mike Dunn

Mayor Nutter has new wheels. His official vehicle will be a brand-new hybrid SUV -- and taxpayers are not footing the bill.

In his 15 years on City Council, Michael Nutter turned down a city car. And he's doing the same as mayor.

Hizzoner will be driven to and from his official duties in a 2008 Chevy Tahoe hybrid (similar to file photo above), and Nutter says he is using leftover campaign money -- not taxpayer dollars -- to pay the estimated $55,000 cost:

"It's cost-effective to the citizens of Philadelphia, because they didn't pay for it. It's a great vehicle, it accomplishes a couple of different goals. I want to make sure that the taxpayers didn't pay for a vehicle for me."

But Nutter, playing the protective father, says his teenage daughter Olivia shouldn't count on driving it anytime soon:

"Olivia will get her license when she's about thirty."

And Nutter says getting a hybrid sends a message about the importance of "going green."
