As the end of February nears, Mayor Nutter marked Black History Month by honoring a group that works to preserve African-American history.
"To understand your present circumstances, people need to know their history."
With those words, Nutter presented a proclamation to the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH).
Shirley Parham (second from left above), president of the local chapter, said Black History Month was started in the 1920s by the historian Carter Woodson, founder of ASALH:
"His early life was in slavery. He went to Harvard University and graduated in history. And he dedicated his entire life just to the history of African-Americans and their inclusion."
Chapter members lifted their voices in song as the City Hall ceremony concluded.
