A group of Drexel law school students spent a week in New Orleans, helping poor residents receive federal funding.
Many of the poorest of New Orleans residents still have not gotten federal funding from the government to repair or rebuild their homes because they can't prove that they own them.
That's where Drexel law school students like Lawrence Slebtz come in, performing free legal work to help residents find deeds, death certificates and other papers to prove home ownership:
“This goes back for decades. Some of our clients' parents died in the 90's and they've been in their houses. In order to get funding as a result of Katrina, they need to establish that they are properly the deed title owner.”
Selbtz says once they get home, their work for the New Orleans residents will continue.
