Local Scientist: Drug-Water Probe Should Not Be Overlooked

by KYW's Kim Glovas

Although water companies are claiming that pharmaceuticals in many of the nation's water supplies are not harmful to humans, a Chester County, Pa. water researcher disagrees.

The Stroud Water Resource Center in Avondale is dedicated to stewardship of global water sources. Anthony Aufdenkampe, assistant research scientist, says pharmaceuticals in the water supply should be a warning:

"It's clear that this is a red flag, we've shown that it's clear that there's a relationship between contaminants in the water and the health of the aquatic ecosystem. And that aquatic ecosystem provides our first line of defense against cleaning our drinking water."

Aufdenkampe says the number and diversity of species goes down as the number of sewage contaminants goes up, and that includes these pharmaceuticals. He says the impact on humans may be subtle, but it should not be ignored.
