The SEPTA board has ordered more than 100 plush new regional rail cars, although riders won’t see them for three years.
Some of the train cars in the regional rail system date back to the 1960s, and SEPTA General Manager Faye Moore is ready to bid them farewell:
"It’s time. They’ve served us well, but its time for them to be retired."
So the SEPTA board has okayed a nearly $250 million contract to purchase 104 state of the art regional rail cars. Moore says SEPTA needs to plan for the future despite its ongoing financial woes:
“We have to make the assumption that SEPTA is ongoing until there is a point in time when people tell us something different.”
The new cars will have fewer seats per car but there will actually be less crowding because SEPTA plans to use more cars per train. They hope to take delivery in about three years.
