Temple Arts Program Gets Anonymous $1 Million Donation

Temple University will use an anonymous million-dollar donation to support student programming.

Trustees at the Philadelphia university voted this week to place the money in an endowment for events at the refurbished Baptist Temple when it reopens in 2010. The school gets its name from the temple, which is undergoing a $29 million renovation.

The gift was one of two anonymous checks unexpectedly received in the mail in early February. A $4 million check was designated by the donor for student scholarships, but the $1 million gift was unrestricted.

The school will turn the 117-year-old building into a venue for lectures, events and performances by groups including the university's symphony orchestra and choir.
