The battle over Pennsylvania’s alcoholic beverage laws continues.
The Malt Beverage Distributors Association of Pennsylvania has filed suit, seeking to overturn a decision by the Liquor Control Board to award liquor licenses to six Wegmans supermarkets. LCB spokesman Nick Hays:
“The board believes it made the correct decision under the liquor code and that that decision will be upheld by Commonwealth Court. Because the case is in court now, there’s really not much more that we can add.”
Hays says the Wegmans stores were awarded restaurant liquor licenses, allowing them to sell beer, wine, and spirits for consumption on the premises and up to two six-packs of beer for consumption off the premises.
Hays says the supermarkets qualify if they serve food and have a seating area, among other criteria. None of the six Wegmans granted licenses are in the Philadelphia area, but an application is pending for a location in Downingtown.
