There’s word that several cable operators -- including Philadelphia-based Comcast -- are working on funding a nationwide wireless network that could offer high-speed Internet access to almost everyone.
It’s called Wi-Max, and like Wi-Fi it’s a high-speed wireless Internet connection, but has a much farther reach than current wireless networks.
The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Comcast and Time Warner cable companies are leading an effort to fund such a nationwide network.
Comcast is said to be willing to front as much as $1 billion for the project, Time Warner about half that.
The network would reportedly be run by Sprint Nextel, which had been supporting Wi-Max research for years, and Clearwire Corp.
Representatives for the companies could not be reached for comment.
