Police are investigating the death of 36-year-old Sean Conroy (in family photo at right) after an incident in the Market-Frankford subway concourse at 13th and Market Streets on Wednesday afternoon.
It happened just before 2:30pm on the westbound side of the area leading to the westbound subway-elevated platform.
Septa police say a sergeant on routine school patrol on the east side saw some kind of disturbance between four boys and a 36-year-old man.
Captain Steven Harold is with Septa transit police:
"He sees the male more or less making some kind of defensive posture. He observes that the other males are around him. They see the sergeant. There's possibly some kind of conflict with these juveniles with him. They end up running when the sergeant is observed approaching the scene."
But Conroy collapsed -- apparently suffering a heart attack. Conroy was an employee at a Starbucks just down the block. He was taken to Jefferson Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Police caught up with one of the boys, a 16-year-old, reportedly a Simon Gratz student. He was questioned and was being held pending autopsy results.
On Thursday morning, authorities were still trying to track down three other teens wanted in this incident. On Thursday afternoon Mayor Nutter (right) said he hoped the incident would not scare off tourists:
"This is not Philadelphia. Bad things unfortunately happen in a lot of places that are considered random, stupid acts of violence. It's a tragedy that it's taken place, and it's certainly my hope that in addition to the one person who's in custody that the other individuals turn themselves in."
