Temple Researchers Find Telemedicine Helps Patients

by KYW’s Lynne Adkins

The web can keep you healthy and an on-going local study can prove that.

Researchers at Temple University School of Medicine have been studying the power of the web to keep patients healthy and in touch with their physicians.

Dr. Alfred Bove, chief of cardiology, studied patients at risk for heart disease and diabetes; half had four doctors visits a year while the other group had the doctor visits and were encouraged to frequently e-mail the physician with health-related information and questions:

“We did better with the diabetic patients in the study because they in particular need to be reporting their blood sugars on a regular basis to get information back on how to control their blood sugars. And in hypertensive group we saw improvement in blood pressure in telemedicine group as opposed to control group.”

He says sending e-mails instead of making office visits is more convenient for patients and doctors.
