It’s almost tax day—a date adult Americans remember. It’s a day to pay your taxes so the government can use the money for needed services.
Wikipedia relates that taxing didn’t always mean taxing income.
For centuries taxation was based on other things, such as wealth, social position and means of production, like animals. Tithing, an offering of first fruits as an ancient custom is perhaps the precursor of income tax.
In the year 10 A.D., Emperor Wang Wang of China instituted a 10% tax on profits for professionals and skilled labor and in Britain in 1798, a graduated tax paid for equipment, preparing for the Napoleonic wars. In our country, income taxes were first proposed for war needs also, the war of 1812.
Today’s taxes are between 10% and 35% of income and in whatever bracket you fall, it’s a somewhat nerve-wracking experience.
