Time to Modernize Beer Sales in Pennsylvania

by KYW's vice president and general manager David Yadgaroff

In case you’ve been standing in the local supermarket waiting for beer to be stocked (see related news story), don’t hold your breath.

Beer distributors who sell by the case are going to court to block approval for some Wegmans stores to sell single beers with a meal in their cafés and six-packs to go (see another related story).

While all this is going on, conflicts are still foaming over distributors' rights to sell six-, twelve- and eighteen-packs instead of the mandated case.

Forgotten in all of the special-interest babbling is the right of consumers to buy one beer or a case in the most convenient way.

For instance, the way they do it just over the borders in Delaware, New Jersey, Maryland, and New York. There, you just go to a supermarket or other retail stop, make your choice, pay, and go -- and usually at a lower price.

It’s time for the legislators in Pennsylvania to act like leaders, separate the various sellers of suds from each others' throats, and pass a measure that keeps the underage crowd and the visibly intoxicated away from beer.

Then, let responsible adults have an adult choice in how they shop.
