A weekend run to the drug store turned into a life saving moment for two men, one of them a member of the Delaware County Council and former assistant DA.
Council vice-chair Jack Whelan ran an errand for his wife when he saw a CVS manager at the Woodlyn store get into an argument with a customer over alleged shoplifting. The customer (photo) pulled out a box cutter and slashed the manager in the arm and neck.
“I immediately intervened and grabbed the perpetrator, pulled him and tried to wrestle him to the floor.”
That’s when another customer, Gene Whelan (no relation), stepped in. Between them, they subdued 49-year-old Cebrian Spence of Chester and held him until Ridley police arrived.
The manager is recovering from his injuries. Spence is held on a half-million dollars cash bail. Jack Whelan has no regrets saying he hopes someone would help him if he was in trouble.
