South Street Facelift Begins; Completion Expected in November

by KYW's John McDevitt

After nearly five years in the planning stages, construction work has begun on the multimillion-dollar South Street  "Streetscape"  project,  aiming to dramatically improve the appearance of the hippest street in town.

Sidewalks are being dug up, and orange construction barrels and plastic fencing are up all over the place on South Street between Front and 8th Streets.

Some businesses have catwalks from the street to the door -- an obvious inconvenience to businesses and to visitors.

Dave Hammond (right) is executive director of the South Street Headhouse District:

"Everyone wants it done. They just don't want it done in front of their place, you know?  But they want the finished product. And we are all going to have to put up with a little grief, unfortunately."

But Hammond says that when the streetscape is done in November, the hippest street in town will have a whole new look --with things like new trees, better lighting, and more attractive sidewalks:

"You know, it's just time for an overhaul -- a little beautification of the area."
