Area Girl Scouts Hold a Fun-and-Fundraiser Swap Meet

by KYW's Al Novack

This is a big weekend for the Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania, who will be hold in a two-day memorabilia swap meet at their Valley Forge service center.

The event is a first for this chapter, and it's designed as a fundraiser.

Eileen Honert is chair of the history archives commitee for the Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania. She tells me the whole purpose is to create interest in Girl Scouting and scout memorabilia, and to raise money for a local scouting museum:

"You'll see old Girl Scout uniforms, with hats and all the proper attire to go with it. We'll have Girl Scout handbooks, from the earliest ones in 1912, all the way up to today."

There will also be jewelry and pins and... who knows? Maybe some collector will bring along a rare Girl Scout bakelite radio from 1939.

As for prices, most patches and other small items sell for 50 cents or a dollar, while a rare item could carry a price tag of $100, $500, or even $1,000.

The hours of the swap meet are Friday 4pm-9pm, and Saturday 9am-3:30pm. The Valley Forge service center is on Rt. 23 in Phoenixville.
