Montco Summer Camp Opens for Children with Autism

by KYW’s Steve Tawa

Children with autism spectrum disorder will be able to get out in nature this summer, thanks to a camp run by the Conshohocken-based non-profit group, 'Dragonfly Forest.'

The things to do list at camp include arts & crafts, sports, and s'mores, according to Dragonfly Forest executive director Fred Weiner:

'The biggest thing that they need to is work on is their skills working with other kids.'

Dragonfly Forest will hold a four day session in late June at the Westtown School in Chester County for autistic children between seven and 14:

'This gives them a chance to have more social interaction with other kids, and it gives parents a chance to have some down time away from the kids.'

It’s the first time the non profit has set up summer camp for autistic children, but it began them in 2005 for children with other serious illnesses and disorders.

Other summer camps include programs for children with asthma and bleeding disorders, and sickle-cell disease.
