The underworld of rock, paper, scissors competitions for adults is showcased in a short film appearing in the Philadelphia International Film festival which is now underway. And the movie is about A KYW Newsradio staff member and his passion.
Los Angeles-based filmmakers James Eowon and Douglas Shaffer who is originally from Newtown, knew they wanted to do an umbrella movie about the world of rock, paper, scissors and its tournaments. But when they met Andre' Bennett -- a KYW Newsradio newsroom service aid -- they say they knew they had to shift their focus and put the spotlight on Andre':
(Eowon): "When we started interviewing and talking to people in Philadelphia, we found Andre'."
(Shaffer): "He is a purist and we like the fact that he took it so seriously and it was very very important to his life. So we thought he was a great character to sort of tell the Rocky, underdog story."
The name of the short film? Frankie13 vs. The World. Frankie13 is the name Andre' uses when he competes:
"My alias is Franky Thirteen and even though in the film it's Franky with the number 13, it's actually the word spelled out like the name is thirteen."
The screening will be at the International House at 3701 Chestnut Street this Saturday at 7pm:
"I'm just so nervous because this is going to be me up on 35 mm."
