Philadelphia police commissioner Charles Ramsey sat down with leaders of the Guardian Angels on Wednesday to discuss a range of safety-related issues.
But the volunteer citizen crime-fighting group apparently fell short in its effort to secure free rides on mass transit while they are patroling (see previous story).
For Commissioner Ramsey (in white shirt above), it was a chance to reconnect with the the Guardian Angels:
"I'm new here, so I want to make sure that we form relationships. I worked with the Angels in Chicago and in the District (of Columbia), and we're just trying to make sure that we all work together."
The Guardian Angels' main focus will be on helping to make the subways and elevated trains safer. There have been three attacks -- one fatal -- in the last couple of weeks (see related stories).
But Guardian Angels' mid-Atlantic director John Ayala was also hoping that Ramsey could help his members get free transit passes:
"Some of these guys don't work, some of them are in school and are just doing this on their free time."
But Ramsey said he's not the guy to ask:
"That's not my bailiwick. That's up to Septa."
Septa says state law restricts passes to agency employees and uniformed cops and firefighters.
