Pa. Election Officials Remind First Timers of ID Guidelines

by KYW's Tony Romeo

New Pennsylvania voters will need to produce valid ID when heading out to the polls on primary day, April 22nd, 2008.

Those required to show ID at the polls include people voting for the first time in any Pennsylvania election and those voting in a particular precinct for the first time. Rebecca Halton is a spokeswoman for the Pennsylvania Department of State:

“There is a variety of both photo and non-photo forms of ID that a voter can present. They can present their Pennsylvania driver’s license or ID card issued by PennDOT, or they can present a current utility bill or a current bank statement.”

This is not the first time ID has been required by new voters. The change was implemented in 2004, and Halton says there have been minimal problems in the past. But this primary is a big one and voters should be prepared.

For a complete list of acceptable forms of ID and a polling place locater, go to votespa.com.

KYW's Larry Kane, meanwhile, reports depending on the hour, the Democratic presidential campaign takes on a new face.

Example, Senator Hillary Clinton called Barack Obama’s comment’s about small town anger over economic times, "elitist" and "arrogant", then called him a good man a few hours later.

The Obama campaign is rolling out press releases of newspaper endorsements and accusing Clinton of being desperate.

Inside the campaigns, Obama is being urged to hold his ground on his explanation of his remarks; Clinton is being advised not to go over the top in her criticism.

On Monday, the candidates were passing each other, closely. Both were attending a manufacturing forum in Pittsburgh then heading to Philadelphia for the Democratic City Committee Gala in the evening. The candidates were addressing the Philadelphia City Committee separately.

The Pennsylvania primary takes place a week from Tuesday.

Sens. Obama and Clinton face off in the Pennsylvania Democratic primary debate taking place this Wednesday evening at 8pm in the National Constitution Center. The only place to hear it live will be on KYW Newsradio 1060 and right here at KYW1060.com.
