S. Jersey Child Hurt in Backyard When Gun Goes Off

by KYW's David Madden and Al Novack

Two Deptford Township, NJ police officers have been placed on administrative leave following the apparently accidental shooting of a two-year-old child.

Gloucester County authorities were continuing their investigation into Thursday's wounding of the child at the home of one of the officers, in the 400 block of Trowbridge Road, in the Woodbury Gardens section of Deptford.

Investigators say two officers were cleaning their service revolvers at the home of one of them when the weapon went off about 4pm Thursday. The bullet struck the son of one of the officers in the face, according to Gloucester County prosecutors.

The child's condition was listed as critical at Cooper Hospital although his injuries were not considered life-threatening.

No names were being released as of Friday afternoon, although both cops were placed on administrative leave -- considered standard procedure -- as the investigation continued.

Authorities expected to have more to say about the incident next week.
