City Council is to cast a final vote on a proposed luxury condo/hotel development that has divided Society Hill.
Council is expected to vote on May 1st on developer Marc Stein's plans for a 15-story condo and hotel on Front Street between Pine and Lombard. That site, called NewMarket, has been vacant for years and in the 90s actor Will Smith tried unsuccessfully to develop it.
Councilman Frank DiCicco agreed to let Stein move forward despite opposition by some neighbors to the height of the project:
"We vetted this out for over a year, there were in excess of 15 public meetings. I think the time for talking is over, and I had to make a decision. That's what I get paid to do."
DiCicco said other neighbors support the plans and those who oppose it could never agree on a lower height that would satisfy them.
A one bedroom condo will cost a $1 million.
