Philadelphia May Consider Bike-Share Plan

by KYW's Jim Melwert

City Council is scheduled to hold hearings this Wednesday to explore benefits of a bike-share program in Philadelphia.

Bicycle coalition of Greater Philadelphia executive director, Alex Doty, explains the concept of bike-sharing:

"You take a bike from any one of these stations and you can go one-way to any other station with in the city."

Users pay a fee, either daily, weekly, or annually, and bikes are checked out and tracked with a smart card.

The hearing in Philadelphia comes as Washington DC prepares to roll out their program.  That program is starting small, with just 10 stations and 120 bikes, not a good idea according to Doty:

"People will not be able to get to all the places they want to go so if we were to do this in Philadelphia, we would like to plan to have it cover the whole city pretty much from the very beginning."

Doty hopes to see hundreds of stations blanketing Philadelphia with over 1,000 bikes.
