Philly Carousel Gets Replicas of Local Winning Race Horses

by KYW's Lynne Adkins

A Philadelphia carousel now features replicas of two local greats in the horse racing world.

The Philadelphia Park Liberty Carousel in Franklin Square has two new horses to ride. Amy Needle, President and CEO of Historic Philadelphia, says the ride features replicas of Afleet Alex, winner of the Preakness and Belmont Stakes, and Smarty Jones, winner of the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes.

"These horses are made for us by our horse carousel-making company in Wichita, Kansas. We sent them pictures of the horses and these are exact replicas of racing carousel horses painted with Smarty and Alfeet colors and numbers."

Each costs $30,000.
