Nutter Administration Seeks More Details On Bike-Share Plan

by KYW's Steve Tawa

The Nutter administration says it needs more information before it 'rolls' with the bike-share program in Philadelphia (see previous story).

Deputy mayor for Transportation and Utilities, Rina Cutler, says City Hall will drill down into the concept when it hires the city's first pedestrian and bicycle coordinator. She also notes the City Planning Commission is about to develop policies and projects to enhance the cycling and walking experience in Philadelphia:

"We do need additional information on how the system will be structured, how it will operate, and what resource commitment will be needed from the city of Philadelphia."

Recently, Washington, D.C. launced a pilot program that includes 10 bicycle docking stations and 120 bikes. Lyon, France caught the attention of Penn student Brittanny Bonnette who wrote her thesis on implementing a public use bicycle program in Philadelphia:

"Introduced in May, 2005, Vélo'v began with 2,000 bicycles and is now moving to 4,000 bicycles with 350 stations throughout the city."

She says fixed stations for picking up and dropping off bikes are spaced an average distance that is only a five-minute walk to any station.
