Supervisor's Comments on Subordinate's MySpace Page

by KYW's Amy Feldman

A woman in Delaware filed a complaint against her supervisor because he sent a message to her myspace page.  When he was told by his supervisor that he should not be viewing his subordinate’s myspace page he was outraged because myspace is public domain.  Can a supervisor be told not to visit the page of a subordinate?

While many people know not to post too much personal information about themselves on line, they often don’t consider the ways in which their postings on the blogs or pages of others can blur the lines between a work relationship and a social one.  A supervisor is advised that posting personal comments may be a way to communicate with friends, but it is advisable not to write personal comments on line or anywhere to someone whom you categorize only as a coworker.
