One of the country's oldest continuous community symphonies is celebrating its 75th season with a special gala performance Saturday night.
The Old York Road Symphony was founded in the Abington area in 1933 by music teachers, professionals and members of the Philadelphia Orchestra for two reasons, says President Paul Seibert; to give local musicians an outlet and to enrich the cultural life of the Philadelphia region:
“All of the musicians are volunteers, which does not mean we are lousy players. It merely means we don't get paid for our services. So, over the years, there've been a number of musicians, music teachers, professional musicians who wanted an additional opportunity to play, and that's sort of what has held the group together.”
