It's getting easier to recycle in Philadelphia.
Starting this week, the city's single-stream recycling program is expanding to North Philadelphia, and parts of the lower Northeast, including Frankford and Logan.
Coordinator Scott McGrath says it now includes nearly half a million homes:
"Residents can put all their recycling out in one or more bins and they can also add #1 and #2 plastics and they can add cardboard, if it's flattened, which makes it easier for us to get it in the trucks."
The only section left to go is the city's northwest. That'll happen this summer, with a Philly-wide conversion to weekly recycling early next year.
McGrath says the ease of single-stream for residents has payoffs for the city and the environment alike:
"This year, we'll recycle over 50,000 tons, which will be the most we've ever collected since the program started. We'll also be looking to get over $1.5 million in revenue from the recycling we collect, and that will also be an all-time high."
