Down The Shore, Pre-Season

This week, Jay Lloyd is on the way to Cape May, where May is a bargain.

Ah, the merry month of May. You can still whiff the salt air instead of sunblock slathered over countless summertime beachgoers.

There are tables to be had at popular restaurants without the wait or reservations. And there are no lines for ice cream cones when you hit Avalon.

May is the month for a Jersey shore getaway. Prices are low, crowds are sparse, temperatures can hit 80 degrees, and the livin’ is easy.

This year, to make sure visitors show up in what is still considered the off-season, some hotels are even offering to fill up your gas tank -– or at least part of the tank. The Golden Inn in Avalon, NJ and the Madison Avenue Beach Club in Cape May are among them. Ask around and you’ll find others that are offering gas cards worth between $20 and $50 at the pump.

For most of us, that’s enough to make it all the way down to Cape May Point for a trek up the popular lighthouse and one of the most stunning panoramic views in all of the Garden State.

That should even be enough to get home. But why would we want to leave? Although, believe or not, someone did write another ditty, "Coming Back from Cape May."
